I never met Dr. Sulayman Dunya, as Umi says in the clip, "Dr. Dunya, he died either before I was born or right after. But I have heard his name my whole life because he was beloved by his Black Muslim convert students. The items in this collection are connected to Umi’s study with him as a new Muslim. Umi’s archive includes multiple handwritten pages of notes from his classes as well as audio cassette recordings, all of which are now over 40 years old. This preservation illustrates what I hear when listening to the recordings and reviewing the notes: the earnestness and sincerity of these new Muslims, these new believing women, that is quite humbling.
