I never met Dr. Sulayman Dunya. As Umi says in this clip, he died either before I was born or right after, but I have heard his name my whole life because he was beloved by his Black Muslim convert students. The items in this collection are connected to Umi's study with him as a new Muslim. Umi's archive includes multiple, handwritten pages of notes from his classes, as well as audio cassette recordings; all of which are now over 40 years old. This preservation illustrates what I hear when listening to the recordings and reviewing the notes: The earnestness and sincerity of these new Muslims, these new believing women, which is quite humbling.
