Notes: Umi studied Arabic because she became Muslim. Black converts, like Umi, have been studying the Arabic language at least since the1920s and by 1974, the fact that Black US Americans were embracing Islam was well known. This makes it both suprising and unsurprising to see that "conversion to Islam" is missing from the reasons listed for rising interest in the Arabic language.
