Notes: Umi's father graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School, a predominately white school, during the Great Depression and the editorial, “The Heritage of Youth,” is shaped by its impact and that of World War II, as it offers a strident critique of state power. The message on the back of the report card seems to be out of step with the times, with its directives to parents. Umi's father has CCNY (City College of New York) listed as his next step, however, his next step was actually the Civilian Conservation Corps.
