Notes: The Black student newspaper, Our Choking Times, noted that the Uhuru dancers were an “integral part of the performance.” A review of the play in the “official” student newspaper, The Lantern, described the dancers as “putting a spell on the audience.” A later article in Our Choking Times narrates the history of the Uhuru Dancers. Umi was among that “handful of Black women” in 1971.
