Umi and newly-made friends and acquaintances at Ohio State University in the fall of 1968.

Notes: When narrating how she ended up at Ohio State, Umi told me a few things. First, my grandmother refused to allow Umi to apply to any colleges in the South (i.e. HBCUs) because she was afraid Umi would go down there and get killed for being too radical. Secondly, Umi waited until the last minute to apply to college and OSU was one of the only schools she could apply that late to. Third, the white female students in her dorm had heard and believed that Black people had tails and so were looking at her as she went to the showers to see if she had one!
