Black Girlhood

Curator's Notes:

The items in this collection narrate a bit of Umi's girlhood, from a toddler to a teen. They invite reflection on some of what it meant to be a Black child in New York City in the mid-twentieth century, which includes how dynamics of race and racism, social class and capitalism, and whiteness and popular culture impacted Black social worlds.
