Notes: Umi on Aliyah: “I've always been a gregarious, open...person and basically, Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, through His mercy sort of put me through to some activist sisters. And one of the activist sisters was my late friend, Aliyah Abdul-Karim. I met [her] coming out of the department store with her little girls with the little short khimars on — she had a gele on. And I remember coming up to her saying "Sister, are you Muslim?" She said: "Yes." And I said: "I'm a Muslim, I just took my shahadah a few weeks ago." Immediately, she gave me her number, [and] she told me about a Muslim women's function at Columbia University with Sharifa Alkhateeb. I met Kareemah Abdul-Kareem. And a lot of those people that I've befriended at Columbia university, are still my friends to this day.”
