Notes: In the only oral history interview I did with Umi, she mentioned briefly that as a young person she had joined the Black Panther Party. I didn't ask, that I can remember, for more details about that. Looking back, I'm kicking myself. But at the same time, maybe I didn't ask for more details because I did not feel the need; I already knew my mother was a revolutionary. What I also remember about this photo is that she told me she made that red jacket herself.
