Companion educational booklets published by Malaysia-based organization, Sisters in Islam.
Notes: Sisters in Islam is an non-governmental organization founded in 1988. amina wadud's Qur'anic analysis was used to compose these booklets. She is one of the organization's co-founders and was key to the organization's development of their “critical reading of the Al-Quran through a hermeneutical approach.” wadud would distribute these pamphlets at lectures, so most likely Umi got these from her directly. My first recollections of Dr. wadud are associated with Umi's high school friend, Sis. Jamillah Adeeb, who had moved with her family to Richmond from Brooklyn in the mid-1990s. At the same time, wadud was a professor of Islamic Studies. Sis. Jamillah became active with the sisterhood in Richmond and it's my guess that she introduced wadud to the sisterhood in NYC.
