Notes: A Queens girl, Umi told me she moved to Brooklyn because that was where all the Muslim activity was. I was a toddler and she was a single parent, and we had been living with my grandmother in Queens. Before she was able to snag a rent-controlled apartment in Ebbets Field, where I grew up, we lived with Auntie Jameela and her two young sons in her apartment close by. They were sistren supporting each other through all the ups and downs. The second photo was taken during a girlfriends' getaway weekend 3 months before Umi passed and 10 months before Jameela joined her.
